About Me

I'm a mom, a teacher, a student, a wife, and a scout leader. I am actually an education major currently working on my practicum in a 2nd grade classroom. I also home school my two children. I'm also a cub scout leader, a girl scout leader, and at church I'm the children's music leader. ;) I tend to stay a little busy. My state requires homeschoolers to keep a portfolio. I am going to use this blog as my portfolio.

What am I?

Seasons: Winter

Music: "Once There Was a Snowman"

Literature:
Math: We talked a bit about how birds fly south for the winter and then we learned how to use a compass. The kids loved it. I spun them around in circles with their eyes closed and they had to find south, we went to different rooms and we went outside and they used the compass to figure out where they were going. So fun!
Art: We made paper snowflakes.
Language arts: I drew a few simple pictures having to do with winter on one side of a piece of paper and then they tried to copy them on the other. I drew a star, a snowman, and a Christmas tree.
Science: We went back to the birds flying south and then talked about the birds who stayed and how they found food. Then we made a bird feeder.

And put it in a tree outside. :)

Seasons: Fall/Autumn

Scripture: Mark 4:29 Explain that the Lord is talking about Fall/Autumn and that one of the things that happens this time of year is that many fruits and veggies ripen and are picked (harvested).

Music: We sang, "It's Autumn Time"

Literature:

Math: We talked a little bit about what happens to the leaves when they change color then we went outside and gathered some of the leaves on the ground. We came back in and sorted them by shape:
 And by size:

Art: We made ppl out of the leaves. It was fun use of the imagination. :)

Science/Language Arts: We talked a little bit about what animals do as far as food to prepare for winter. We discussed several specific animals and and finally came to squirrels. We talked about how they hide their nuts but they have to hide them well enough that other animals don't find them. So I gave each of the kids 5 chestnuts (they look sort of like acorns but are larger).

Then, I went through the house (I was another animal) and picked up whatever chestnuts I found sitting out in the middle. Then we talked a little more about animals and how important it is for them to remember where they hid them so they can eat them in wintertime. Then, I sent the kids off to find the ones that I didn't. I found 4 of Ronni's and 1 of Collin's from just walking through. Ronni found her 1 and Collin only found 2 of the 4 he needed to find. He couldn't remember where they were (we later found them). So, we discussed how difficult it is for animals to remember where food is.
Then, we talked a little about the wind and made wind detectors. =o)

Seasons - Day 1: Overview

Let me start by apologizing for getting so behind on this blog. It was overwhelming just thinking about catching up so I'm not catching up. We're just going to start with what we did today. sorry! Life has been crazy for us since Thanksgiving.

Scripture: We started off reading Ecclesiastes 3:1 and talked about seasons and how there is a time and place for everything. Then we started talking about how the earth is the same way.

Music: We sang "Rain is Falling All Around"   We actually sang it twice with all 5 versus. haha! The kids LOVE this song! :)

Literature: We read The Year at Maple Hill Farm by Alice Provensen. It's really cute and talks about each month of the year and what is happening with the animals and the weather. It's a bit long but both my kids (5 & 3) sat through the whole thing.

Math: Understanding calendars is an important skill for children to learn. First off, make a season wheel.

Draw a circle and divide it into fourths then draw a picture to represent each season in the sections. Then write the months that belong to the season with a smaller picture to represent them. I did this with the kids and they helped me pick the pictures to represent them.
Then we took a calendar and I had the kids find different dates. Once they found them, with the help of the season wheel we just made, they figure out which season it is. We worked on all of our birthdays. :)

Language Arts: We talked about what we would wear for each season. We would have put on clothes for each season but all of our summer clothes are put away right now so it wouldn't have worked well. Instead we just talked about it.

Science/Art: We made a season book:

Spring: My 5 yo wrote it himself but ran out of room so the g is a little high. The blue spots are rain drops and the colors are flowers.
Summer: He had a hard time writing this. The blue is water b/c we go swimming in the summer. ;)
Fall: Those are leaves falling from the trees!
Winter: We glued salt to the paper to represent snow.
